Tottenham have been the silent assassins in the Premier League this season.
As they have in the past, they’ve gone under the radar for much of the campaign, yet as we edge closer to the end of the season, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are just 5 points off the top of the table.
Of course, given the fine form of Liverpool and Man City this season, it was always going to be tough for Spurs to keep pace at the top of the table, yet somehow, they’re still within touching distance.
Whether they’ll be able maintain their pace between now and the rest of the season remains to be seen, but Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson thinks that they will have a much better idea within the next few days .
Merson has been discussing the weekend’s Premier League fixtures, and he thinks that there are two games that will determine Tottenham’s prospects this weekend.
He said : ‘Tottenham could get back in the title race if they win this game and Liverpool don’t beat Manchester United’. He continued: ‘If Liverpool beat United, then I don’t think Spurs are in it – I think it’s too many points – but if they win this and Liverpool don’t win, then they are in it because they still have to play Liverpool.
Of course, a win will put them just two points behind the Premier League leaders, and if Liverpool happen to lose to Man Utd, they’ll stay there until the next round of fixtures.
Meanwhile, a loss could make the gap as big as eight points, and so the margins could not be tigher for Tottenham.
The good news for them is that they’re facing a team that they have every chance of beating in the form of Burnley. They beat the Clarets 1-0 in the reverse fixture back in December, and that bodes well.
Of course, Tottenham have had some more good news this week in the form of the return of Harry Kane. Kane’s been out of action for weeks, and so the fact that the Lilywhites have been able to keep pace with their rivals without him bodes very well for the rest of the season.
Their title charge may not be made this weekend, but a loss could effectively close the book on any hope of beating Man City and Liverpool to the punch – at least according to Merson.
