Cat arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs escapes from prison

A cat detained at a high-security prison in Sri Lanka over alleged attempt to smuggle drugs and cell phone SIM cards has escaped, media reports said Monday.

jail intelligence officials detected the feline creature on Saturday at the Welikada Prison, a police official said. He said the cat was found with nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip in a small plastic bag tied around its neck.

But it escaped on Sunday from a prison room where it was kept, the Aruna newspaper said.

Welikada prison authorities had reported an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.
