Breaking: Court grants ex-SGF Babachir Lawal, 2 others bail

An Abuja High Court has granted bail to the former Secretary General of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal and two others.
Channels TV reports that the court on Wednesday, February 13, granted them bail in the sum of N50m each with one surety.

It is confirmed that the sureties must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court; they must possess titles to lands within the jurisdiction of the court, show evidence of payment of tax for the past three years.
The court further noted that each of the defendants is to deposit their international passport with the court pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions and are to remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Babachir is being accused of diverting funds meant for the clearing of evasive plants in the troubled northeast. Next trial has been fixed for March 18.

Meanwhile, it we had previously reported that after Babachir Lawal pleaded not guilty to the 10-count charge filed against him by the EFCC, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered that the former Secretary General to the Federation be remanded in the custody of the commission.

It was reported that many months after he was suspended from office as the SGF, Lawal, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the 10-count charge filed against him by the EFCC.
